Vers un retour des touristes au Cambodge au quatrième trimestre ?

Le ministère du tourisme cambodgien annonce étudier dans une vidéo parue sur YouTube ce week end, la possibilité des visiteurs étrangers à partir du quatrième trimestre.

Ainsi les touristes étrangers vaccinés contre la Covid seraient exemptés de quarantaine ou verraient leurs quarantaines réduites.

Cette vidéo ne donne pas plus d’informations sur les modalités pratiques. Or c’est certainement dans ces modalités pratiques que va se jouer le retour des touristes notamment européens

Les professionnels dans l'attente

Cette crise du covid a en effet appris la circonspection à beaucoup. Ainsi cette propriétaire d’agence de voyage dont l’activité a complètement cessé avec la fermeture des frontières en mars 2019 nous déclare :

Je souhaite évidemment que les frontières rouvrent , mais entre ce qu’on souhaite et la réalité de ce que sera le quatrième trimestre…. Il est encore trop tôt pour se réjouir .

Un avis partagé par une autre directrice d’agence basée à Siem Reap qui s’attend surtout à ce que les premiers touristes soient surtout chinois, japonais et coréens.

Cette réouverture sera aussi vraiment effective quand les agences européennes commenceront à proposer le Cambodge dans leur catalogue. Ce à quoi nous ne nous attendons pas avant 2022.

Un Cambodge authentique à prix abordables

Toutefois, si cette information se confirme, ce sera aussi une extrêmement bonne nouvelle pour les touristes en quête d’authenticité à des prix agréables.

En effet, les touristes ne vont pas tous revenir tout de suite visiter le Royaume. Or s’il est des moments magiques que l’on peut souhaiter à chacun, c’est notamment de pouvoir se promener presque seul dans les temples angkoriens et de pouvoir bénéficier pleinement du formidable accueil que les Cambodgiens réservent à leurs visiteurs.

Et si cette réouverture devient vraiment effective en fin d’année, elle sera certainement abordable à presque toutes les bourses tant les hôtels, restaurants, et autres attractions touristiques ont dû baisser leurs prix pour tenter de capter le peu de touristes présents.

Cambodia’s Vaccination Coverage Reach Nearly 23%

The vaccination coverage against COVID-19 pandemic in Cambodia rose to almost 23 percent or some 2,280,875 of the planned 10 million people to be vaccinated, as of May 24.

The figures were shared by the National Ad-hoc Commission for COVID-19 Vaccination, adding that of them, 1,646,994 have already got their second doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Members of the diplomatic corps, staff of UN agencies and international organisations and their family members were among the vaccinated people.

This morning, the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration and the National Ad-hoc Commission for COVID-19 Vaccination launched the vaccination campaign in other three Khan – Chamkar Mon, 7 January, and Chbar Ampov – in addition to Khan Boeung Keng Kang, Khan Sensok and the Red zones.

Cambodia has set to vaccinate around 10 million people or 62 percent of the total population against COVID-19 and up to the half of 2022, more than 95 percent are expected to be inoculated.

The Kingdom has received over 6 million doses of vaccines: 1.7 million doses of China-donated Sinopharm, 4 million doses of Sinovac bought from China, and 324,000 doses of AstraZeneca/SII (COVISHIELD) via COVAX Facility. More doses are expected to arrive in Cambodia next month.

Marguerite Donnadieu, Marguerite Duras de son nom d’écrivain, est née 1914 dans une Indochine qu’elle allait définitivement quitter en 1932.

De ses séjours au Cambodge, brefs et irréguliers, il nous est parvenu une œuvre majeure.

Cette conférence proposera une analyse du #Cambodge de Marguerite Duras et confrontera son chef d’œuvre, « Un barrage contre la pacifique » à la réalité de l’Indochine coloniale.

Nous verrons que l’approche romanesque de Marguerite Duras n’oblitère en rien la réalité, souvent sordide, du lieu.

Trois points de vue seront privilégiés : La trame romanesque et les faits, la géographie durassienne de l’Indochine et la langue de Marguerite Duras.

"Dans l’imaginaire des lecteurs français, les romans de Marguerite Duras sont immanquablement liés à un univers sino-vietnamien. La publicité qui va de pair avec les rééditions des œuvres de Marguerite Duras renforce encore ce sentiment : dragons et caractères chinois ne laissent aucune place à l’ambiguïté. Et pourtant…

« Un barrage contre le Pacifique », l’ouvrage qui allait durablement faire connaître Marguerite Duras, dessine la carte de l’Indochine durassienne. Il s’agit cette fois d’une Indochine qui se joue des frontières entre le protectorat cambodgien et la colonie Cochinchinoise et qui traduit en géographie les espoirs et les rêves d’une famille.

Le Cambodge, en fait la région de Kampot, constitue l’essentiel du cadre où prend racine « Un barrage contre le pacifique ». Un roman emblématique, un fil directeur qui guidera l’essentiel de l’œuvre durassienne à venir.

Cette conférence mettra en valeurs deux thèmes : d’une part, la relation entre le roman et la réalité de la vie de la famille Donnadieu dans la plaine de Ream ; d’autre part, la géographie durassienne de l’Indochine

À propos du conférencier

Patrick Kersalé ethno-archéo-musicologue et musicien.

Au cours des trois dernières décennies, il a œuvré dans une quarantaine de pays d’Europe, d’Afrique, d’Amérique et d’Asie pour photographier, enregistrer, filmer les musiciens traditionnels et étudier leur musique.

Musicien, conférencier, pédagogue, il est l’auteur de centaines publications consacrés aux musiques traditionnelles.

Depuis 2009, il étudie les instruments de musique et la danse de l'époque angkorienne à travers l'iconographie, l’épigraphie et les objets archéologiques.

Sur la base de cette recherche, il a reconstruit des instruments disparus, notamment des harpes, des cithares, des tambours, des trompes et des conques.

Jérôme de Oliveira

Winner of the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie 2009.

He runs ‘Intuitions by J’ in Cannes. Despite his young age, he has won the world cup twice. Since 2012, he has run ‘Intuitions by J’, located in the exclusive #French Riviera.

His stalwarts have even used the words ‘nirvana’, ‘high art’ and ‘orgasm’ when tasting his creations.

Since the age of 4, Jerome has always wanted to be a pastry chef. Born in a family where the taste of cooking and good things are very present, he is passionate immediately for the pastry and the creativity that results. He enjoys the associations of perfumes, the play of textures, shapes, colors ... the unlimited wealth of gluttony!

Originally from Lyon, he made his apprenticeship: BEP, BAC PRO and BTM at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Pâtisserie. He made his debut next to a big name, Sébastien Bouillet, Relais Desserts International. Wanting to progress with his idol, Jerome then gave himself the means to integrate the brigade of Christophe Michalak Plaza Athénée.

From competition to competition, Jerome proves that he loves the challenge and that it succeeds him since he won the World of Sweet Arts in 2007, and realizes his dream in 2009, becoming the youngest World Champion of Pastry at just 23 years old.

After 5 years at the Plaza, he left his position as sous chef in April 2011 and set himself a new challenge by moving to Cannes, then Monaco and Polygone Riviera to create the "Intuitions" bakery, an expression of his generosity. .

Gluttony is a source of inexhaustible happiness! That is his motto.

Beng Mealea or Bung Mealea

Its name means "lotus pond" is a temple in the Angkor Wat period : 118–119 located 40 km east of the main group of temples at Angkor, Cambodia, on the ancient royal highway to Preah Khan Kompong Svay.

It was built as a Hindu temple, but there are some carvings depicting buddhist motifs.

Its primary material is sandstone and it is largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps.

For years it was difficult to reach, but a road recently built to the temple complex of Koh Ker passes Beng Mealea and more visitors are coming to the site, as it is 77 km from Siem Reap by road.

The history of the temple is unknown and it can be dated only by its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat, so scholars assumed it was built during the reign of king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. Smaller in size than Angkor Wat, the king's main monument, Beng Mealea nonetheless ranks among the Khmer empire's larger temples: the gallery which forms the outer enclosure of the temple is 181 m by 152 m. It was the center of a town, surrounded by a moat 1025 m by 875 m large and 45 m wide.

Beng Mealea is oriented toward the east, but has entranceways from the other three cardinal directions. The basic layout is three enclosing galleries around a central sanctuary, collapsed at present. The enclosures are tied with "cruciform cloisters", like Angkor Wat. Structures known as libraries lie to the right and left of the avenue that leads in from the east. There is extensive carving of scenes from Hindu mythology, including the Churning of the Sea of Milk and Vishnu being borne by the bird god Garuda. Causeways have long balustrades formed by bodies of the seven headed Naga serpent.

It was built mostly of sandstone: Beng Mealea is only 7 km far from the angkorian sandstone quarries of Phnom Kulen, as the crow flies. Presumably sandstone blocks used for Angkor were transported along artificial water canals and passed from here.

Despite of lack of information, the quality of architecture and decorations has drawn the attention of French scholars just from its discovery

It Might Feel Like The City Has Shut Down For The Holidays, But Don’t Panic, We Have You Covered With These Great Places That Have Kept Open Their Doors.

WAIT – WHAT IS PCHUM BEN?

Pchum Ben is much more than simply the time when all your favourite drinking spots inconveniently close for a week. It is a unique and very Cambodian festival.

The celebration dates back to the Angkorian era when the dominant religion was Animism. Since then it has incorporated touches of of influence from both Animism and Buddhism as a festival which reflects the Khmer tradition of respect for your ancestors.

The first 14 days of the festival are known as the observed celebration or Kan Ben. The 15th and final day is called Pchum Ben day and is the time where monks are given gifts and candles.

The monks then recite a prayer and it is on this night that the village comes together for the night of celebration. After they have of course, dealt with all those ravenous ghosts.

The festival is in part, a time to feed hungry ghosts.

Four types of ghost are at play here. The kind that eats pus and blood, the forever hot burning ghost, and the Pakrakteaktopak Chivi, who can receive food through the monks over the festival period.

The other ghosts must reduce their level of sin before they can receive food.

It is customary to offer the ghosts bey ben, balls of sticky rice and sesame that are laid out before dawn.

The ghosts with heavy sins are understood to not be able to receive food during the day. Bay ben is made from sticky rice and sesame with some adding coconut cream for flavour.

So… What Happens ?

Now you understand the festival, remember that is a very important time people for Khmer culture so be patient that our beloved little city comes to a temporary stand still.

The beautiful temple in Siemreap Pre Rup

The Pre Rup was the state temple of King Rajendravarman II. It is a mountain temple build in the year 961, located just South of the large East baray and the East Mebon, another mountain temple build by Rajendravarman II just 9 years earlier.

In the early 20th century the Pre Rup had been completely overgrown and covered with soil. The temple was excavated during the 1930’s by French conservators George Trouvé and Henri Marchal.

Stepped pyramid representing Mount Meru

Its architectural style is very similar to that of the earlier East Mebon, the major difference being the stepped pyramid of the Pre Rup that is missing in the East Mebon temple. The laterite and brick structure represents the five mountain peaks of the sacred mountain Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Hindu mythology.

An inscription in the temple mentions that the five prangs were dedicated to Shiva (central tower and one of the surrounding towers), Vishnu, Parvati (the consort of Shiva) and Lakshmi (the consort of Vishnu).

The temple used to be surrounded by moats. There are two enclosures, each with a gopura entrance gate at the center of each side. Between the outer and inner enclosure were long halls of which not much remains today. They were a predecessor of the galleries seen in later temples.

6 large towers to the East

Most striking feature of the Pre Rup temple are the three large towers on either side of the Eastern entrance, the main entrance of the temple. The first tower to the right of the entrance is missing, although the base is there. The tower was either never build or demolished and the stones used elsewhere later. The towers were probably build later during the reign of the next King, King Jayavarman V.

The central tower contains a sanctuary room. The lintels contain Indra riding the elephant Airavata, Vishnu on Garuda (a large mythological bird, the mount of Vishnu) and other depictions.

Inner enclosure

Just past the Eastern gate of the inner enclosure are two large libraries, one on each side of the entrance that probably contained Hindu statues. Between the two libraries is a three meter long structure, that likely served as a pediment for a statue, possibly of Nandi, the sacred bull and mount of Shiva. In the North East corner of the inner enclosure is a small laterite building that has been restored.
